COCKLES consortium with UBx in charge, created a guide with thorough information on each identified pathogen threatening cockle beds along the Atlantic Area. For each pathogenic agent, it is included a map with geographic distribution of prevalence and abundance, indication of individual and population pathogenicity, together with risk assessment and management recommendations.

COCKLES project, aiming to restore the production and the services provided by cockles (bivalve) in the Atlantic Area, included a strong communication and outreach segment that generated literacy, awareness and engagement on multiple audiences. This short film focuses on examples of these actions.

During 3 days, our progress within the project was shared and the final year was planned.

There was also time for a stakeholders' workshop and great social events.

Little future scientists came from Guarda to Aveiro to hear about COCKLES. There was time for a hands-on experience and we had so much fun together!

During this week, an workshop on identification of main pathogens of cockles by histology is taking place on La Tremblade, in the IFREMER facilities, from 20th to 24th May. This event is organised by the EU Reference Laboratory for mollusc diseases, Ifremer, La Tremblade.

COCKLES steering meeting took place in Olhão, Portugal from 9th-10th April 2019.

COCKLES at school

2019-02-19

What do COCKLES look like? Where do they live? Which benefits do cockles provide to the society?

These are some of the questions we discussed with kids (9-12 years old) of Carrasqueira School (Vigo, Galicia (Spain)) last week. With the littles one (3 to 5 years old) we had a lot of fun picking cockles from tricky sand trays and making colourful cockles butterflies.

Modelling flows: larval dispersal and trophic cascades.

Field work in Ria de Aveiro (5-6 Jan) and Sado estuary (7-11 Jan), Portugal: collecting cockles and main competitors to evaluate possible feeding niche overlap.

The next Annual Meetings of National Reference Laboratories for Molluscs Diseases, will take place in Arcachon, Marine Station, France, on 19-21 March, 2019.

Histological sections illustrating the most severe pathological conditions

affecting cockles in Galicia:

1. Infection with Marteilia cochillia

Left: histological section through the digestive gland of a healthy cockle.

Right: histological section through the digestive gland of a cockle infected with Marteilia cochillia;

multiple parasites (arrows) appear colonising the epithelium of the digestive tubules.

2. Disseminated neoplasia

Left: histological section through the gills of a healthy cockle.

Right: histological section through the gills of a cockle affected by disseminated neoplasia, showing

the connective tissue and the lumen of the branchial vessels heavily invaded by neoplastic cells.

3. Granulomatosis

Histological section through the gills of a cockle showing large granulomas (stars)

consisting of mases of haemocytes and cell surrounded by connective fibres and flattened cells.

4. Infection with a haplosporidan-like parasite

Histological section through the digestive gland of a cockle showing uninucleate (arrow)

and binucleate cells (double arrows) accumulated in the connective tissue.

5. Infestation with Bucephalus minimus

Histological section through the gonadal area of a cockle showing multiple sporocysts

of this digenean trematode invading the connective tissue of the host.

COCKLES in the "Label EPOC" french Newsletter, n. 6 (Autumn).

On 8 October the University of Bordeaux set-up an experiment which contributes to several work packages (5, 6 and 8) of the COCKLES project. The experiment was set-up on the Banc d’Arguin, an intertidal sand bank situated in Arcachon Bay along the French Atlantic coast.

At low tide, at around 8? AM, we started to dig the cages in the sediment.

Then we had to look for cockles.. 3000 in total of a similar size were required!

But we managed, and I was very happy!

This event took place in 3rd September in the Royal Imperial College London.

"I presented a poster, as well as a powerpoint presentation, detailing the significance of the WP4.1 (Baseline assessment) and how it might inform us of the response of cockles to changing climate." Kate Mahony
