from Ria de Aveiro (Portugal)

Authors: Luísa Magalhães, Simão Correia, Xavier de Montaudouin, Rosa Freitas

Description: A spatio-temporal monitoring of cockles from Ria de Aveiro (Portugal) was performed. Trematode infection modulates cockles biochemical response to climate change

Authors: Luísa Magalhães, Xavier de Montaudouin, Etelvina Figueira, Rosa Freitas

Description: Following an experimental approach, it was demonstrated that when exposed to climate change related factors (water acidification and warming), cockles presented higher infection rate and weak biochemical performance. This study highlighted the negative impact of forecasted changes in cockles, which may promote the proliferation of parasites with influence on the geographical distribution of some diseases.

Authors: Luísa Magalhães, Xavier de Montaudouin, Etelvina Figueira, Rosa Freitas

Description: Following an experimental approach, this study showed the harmful effects of trematode parasites in cockles individual health and highlighted the importance to include parasitology in ecotoxicological studies to avoid incorrect identification of some marine species as tolerant or susceptible to a given stress, when in fact the physiological response of the organism is modified by a parasitic infection.

Temporal dynamics of infection of cockles 'Cerastoderma edule' with the protistan parasite 'Minchinia tapetis' (Rhizaria: Haplosporida) in Galicia (NW Spain)

Authors: María J. Carballal, Assunción Cao, David Iglesias, Ana I. González, Antonio Villalba

Description: A new occurrence of Minchinia tapetis (Rhizaria: Haplosporidia) was detected in cockles from Ría de Noia (Galicia, Spain) with high prevalence but low to moderate intensity. The positive correlation found between this parasite prevalence and water temperature, classified this parasite species as a possible production threat in actual and predicted climate change scenarios.

'Monorchis parvus' and 'Gymnophallus choledochus': two trematode species infecting cockles as first and second intermediate host

Authors: Luísa Magalhães, Guillemine Daffe, Rosa Freitas, Xavier de Montaudouin

Description: A literature review was performed to depict infection patterns of two trematode species using cockles as host. It was showed that different parasite species display different size range preferences and that coinfection is rare, raising some questions about interspecific competition. It was highlighted the need to identify main predictors of infection towards better management of severe disease and mortality events.

Does parasitism influence sediment stability? Evaluation of trait-mediated effects of the trematode 'Bucephalus minimus' on the key role of cockles 'Cerastoderma edule' in sediment erosion dynamics

Authors: Annabelle Dairain, Olivier Maire, Guillaume Meynard, Francis Orvain

Description: This study confirmed the influence of cockles in the sediment dynamics and stability (= ecosystem engineers) and was pioneer in the study of indirect influence of parasitism on sediment dynamics processes. It was demonstrated that when parasitized, cockles had a different influence on the sediment dynamics with impact in the microphytobenthos growth.

Large scale patterns of trematode parasite communities infecting 'Cerastoderma edule' along the Atlantic coast from Portugal to Morocco

Authors: Simão Correia, Luísa Magalhães, Rosa Freitas, Hocein Bazairi, Meriam Gam, Xavier de Montaudouin

Description: A spatial monitoring of cockles from Portugal to Morocco was performed to analyse trematode community patterns. The results showed that more important than latitude and besides host presence, the temperature is an important trigger of parasite infection with coastal upwelling operating as a shield against trematode infection in Portugal.

Parasite Assemblages in a Bivalve Host Associated with Changes in Hydrodynamics

Authors: Simão Correia, Ana Picado, Xavier de Montaudouin, Rosa Freitas, Rui Rocha, João Dias, Luísa Magalhães

Description: Following a spatio-temporal monitoring of cockles from Ria de Aveiro (Portugal) and an experimental approach, it was demonstrated that cockles collected intertidally and exposed to higher water current velocities showed higher infection rates than subtidal cockles or exposed to lower current velocity. This study highlighted the importance of host vertical and horizontal position on trematode infection, highlighting the positive influence of current velocity by supporting trematode settlement and favourable abiotic conditions.

Mobilisation of data to stakeholder communities. Bridging the research-practice gap using a commercial shellfish species model

Authors: Kate E. Mahony, Sharon A. Lynch, Sian Egerton, Sara Cabral, Xavier de Montaudouin, Alice Fitch, Luísa Magalhães, Mélanie Rocroy, Sarah C. Culloty

Description: A comprehensive study of the European cockles was performed gathering historical data on: cockle abundance, spawning duration and harvest levels, as well as the ecological factors impacting cockle populations. The analyses identified the key stakeholder communities involved in cockle research and data acquisition. A major finding was that local variability in cockle populations is influenced by biotic (parasites) and abiotic (temperature, legislation and harvesting) factors, and at a global scale by climate (AMO Index).

How costly are metacercarial infections in a bivalve host? Effects of two trematode species on biochemical performance of cockles

Authors: Luísa Magalhães, Rosa Freitas, Xavier de Montaudouin

Description: Throught experimental analysis, this study demonstrated that trematode infection exert a negative effect on the metabolism of cockles, when infected as second intermediate host, by reduction of oxygen consumption. It contributes to the understanding of host-trematode relationships that can be used to better predict potential conservation threats to bivalve populations and to maximize the success of stock and disease management.

Sediment stability: can we disentangle the effect of bioturbating species on sediment erodibility from their impact on sediment roughness?

Authors: Annabelle Dairain, Olivier Maire, Guillaume Meynard, Anaïs Richard, Tiffany Rodolfo-Damiano, Francis Orvain

Description: In this study, it was observed that cockles promote the erosion of the sediment surficial layer by increasing its roughness as a consequence of their sediment reworking activity and/or presence at the sediment surface (emerging shell). This destabilizing effect was grain size and density dependente.

Latitudinal influence on gametogenesis and host–parasite ecology in a marine bivalve model

Authors: Kate E. Mahony, Sharon A. Lynch, Sian Egerton, Rebecca E. Laffan, Simão Correia, Xavier de Montaudouin, Nathalie Mesmer-Dudons, Rosa Freitas, Sarah C. Culloty

Description: This study aimed to investigate the associative effects of host reproduction and a host–parasite interplay on a marine bivalve, along a geographic gradient of latitude. It was found localized site-related drivers, namely seawater temperature, with impact on cockle–trematode interactions. The demonstrated spatial trend of energy allocation indicates the potential of a temporal trend of reduced cockle growth at northern sites, as a result of warming sea temperatures.
